Overview

As You Like It is among Shakespeare’s comedies but also qualifies in contemporary terms as a romantic comedy.

The play was based on Thomas Lodge’s prose romance, Rosalynde: Euphues Golden Legacie (published in 1590). Rosalynde was based on an uncredited 14th Century poem, The Tale of the Gamelyn, which relates the story of Gamelyn de Boundys, whose inheritance has been expropriated by his brother, forcing him to live as an outlaw until he prevails and recovers his birthright.

The title, scholars believe, refers to the play’s lighthearted nature which allows audiences to interpret it however they wish.
