The Complete Shakespeare Experience

Shakespeare was a common name in 16th Century England although spelled although spelled several different ways, including Shagspere and Chacsper. Born to Mary Arden (c1540-1608), the daughter of a wealthy farmer in Wilmcote, Warwickshire, and John Shakespeare (c1530-1601), who was a burgess, then an alderman, and bailiff (equivalent to mayor in its day) of Stratford, and also a leather tanner, glovemaker, and  “ale-

taster of the borough.”

William Shakespeare, the third of eight children (four boys, four girls) in the family, was baptized on April 26, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, in rural Warwickshire County, about 100 miles northwest of London, England. As his father owned three homes in Stratford, one on Greenhill Street and two on Henley Street, in which home Shakespeare was born cannot be known with certainty. With no precise birth records being kept at the time, Shakespeare’s birthday is celebrated on St. George’s Day, April 23rd. Although no records exist, Shakespeare is thought to have been educated at the King’s New School, a free public institution in Stratford, about one-quarter mile from his home on Henley Street. Under a curriculum dictated by law, he would have studied Latin and the classics.
