Several works formed the basis of Cymbeline,
including Boccaccio’s The Decameron and Holinshed’s
The Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland
(also known as Holinshed’s Chronicles). It is unclear
whether A Mirror for Magistrates (Ferrer and Baldwin)
also served as a source for this romantic comedy.
Cymbeline’s decisions drive much of the play’s action
but two other major characters, Imogen and Posthumus, also influence this work.
