One of Shakespeare’s most revered plays, Hamlet,

Prince of Denmark is classified as a tragedy.

Several earlier works served as the inspiration for

Hamlet including Gesta Danorum (The Deeds of the

Danes), a Latin tale from the late 12th or early 13th

Century which recants the tale of Amleth, and Gesta

Danorum itself may have been based on an Icelandic saga, known as Amlói. Other sources may have been Ur-Hamlet (Original Hamlet, which some scholars claim Shakespeare actually wrote), The Spanish Tragedy, a 10th Century Celtic tale about a warrior known as Amhlaide, and an 11th Century Persian tale, Shah-nameh (The Book of Kings).
