The Troublesome Raigne of King John of England

(1591), itself based on The Chronicles of England,

Scotland, and Ireland (Holinshed’s Chronicles),

served as the source for this history play which

recounts the reign and downfall of Engand’s

King John.

Born in 1167, a younger brother to Richard the Lion-Hearted (and one of three sons of King Henry II), John inherited the throne when King Richard died in battle in France in 1189.
