Overview

One of Shakespeare’s most respected tragedies,

King Lear, is thought to be based on The True

Chronicle History of King Leir and His Daughters (1594),

The Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland,

(also known as Holinshed’s Chronicles), Arcadia (1590)

and a pamphlet published in the Netherlands,

entitled “Strange, Fearful and True News Which

Happened at Carlstadt in the Kingdom of Croatia.” The first documented performance took place at Whitehall Palace on December 26, 1606 to an audience that included King James I.
