Overview   Complete Text   Synopsis    Characters/Settings    Themes   Famous Quotes    Essay Questions/Topics

The shortest of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Macbeth

has no subplots and joins the ranks of Shakespeare’s

other tragedies, Richard III, Othello, and Julius Caesar,

wherein the protagonist commits murder. As with

many other Shakespeare works, Macbeth was based

in part on The Chronicles of England, Scotland, and

Ireland (Holinshed’s Chronicles) (1577) by Raphael

Holinshed and perhaps also Declaration of Egregious Popishe Impostures (1603) by Samuel Harsnett, Rerum Scoticarum Historia (1582) by George Buchanan, and reports of Scottish witch trials.
