Overview

Some consider The Merchant of Venice a

comedy, others consider it a tragic-comedy,

as it has elements of both tragedy and comedy,

and characters who are comedic and others

who are to be pitied. Il Pecorone (1378) by

Giovanni Fiorentino, Gesta Romanorum (late 13th

Century), and The Jew of Malta (circa 1590) by

Christopher Marlowe, along with some Oriental tales, are thought to have served as the basis for The Merchant

of Venice.
