Another of Shakespeare’s comedies, A Midsummer

Night’s Dream was based, in part, on many different

sources including: Geoffrey Chaucer’s 14th Century

work, The Knight’s Tale; The Golden Ass (by Apuleius,

2nd Century A.D.); Life of Theseus (by Plutarch in

approximately the 1st to 2nd Centuries A.D.); King

James the Fourth (Robert Greene in the late 16th Century); Metamorphoses (Ovid, 1st Century B.C.); and perhaps Terrors of the Night (Thomas Nashe, 16th Century) and Epithalmium (Edmund Spenser, 1595).
