One of the more violent Shakespearean plays, Titus

Andronicus is a tragedy which also includes some

elements of dark humor. The play traces its roots to

Greek and Roman dramas including Hecuba (5th

Century B.C., Euripedes), Thyestes and Troades (1st

Century A.D., Seneca), and Metamorphoses (1st

Century B.C., Ovid). The Spanish Tragedy (16th Century, Thomas Kyd) may also provided a source for Titus Andronicus.
