Overview

This comedy’s complete title is Twelfth Night, or

What You Will. Several works are thought to have

served as the basis for this play including: Apolonius

and Silla (Barnabie Riche) which was included in

Riche’s Farewell to the Military Profession (1581).

Riche, in turn, based his work on Novelle (Matteo

Bandello), who used the anonymous work,

Gl’Ingannati (The Deceived, published 1537), as

his inspiration.
